Living with your debt problems

Debt problems are starting to hit more and more people in the UK, as years and years of easy credit start to bite in the form of huge monthly repayment amounts.

For some people, these repayments are an annoyance but simply a fact of life. For others, they represent a real threat to their financial stability, and a source of great stress and worry.

If you're one of these people, is there anything you can do to help the situation?

Firstly, stay positive

Okay, no one likes to be in debt, and no one enjoys the stress and worry that comes with it. But try and stay positive.

It's not necessarily as bad as it seems, and there's no need to feel shame - debt can become a problem for anyone, especially in today's credit culture, and it's often the highest earners that can experience the highest debt as things start to snowball.

If you try and keep a clear head and plan your next moves, you've every chance of overcoming your problems.

Make a budget

The first thing to do is to make a budget, where you set out all your income and outgoings so you can see exactly what your situation is.

This might be a nerve-wracking task, as most people with debt problems find the thought of examining their finances too closely quite scarey. It needs to be done though - your debts won't go away on their own. You'll probably find that simply setting things out on paper gives you a sense of regaining control, and taking action over your problems rather than being controlled by them. That alone makes it a worthwhile exercise.

Once you've worked out what's coming in and what's going out, you can try and find ways of improving the situation, and of handling your repayments as best as you can.

Cut spending

Be honest with yourself - is there anything you regularly spend that you could do without? Every pound you don't spend is really the same as an extra pound earned, and can be put towards lowering your debt. This doesn't mean that you have to eat baked beans on toast for every meal (hopefully), but with a bit of thought there's usually quite a few ways you can cut back on your spending.

Earning extra income

If, after making your budget and cutting as much expenditure as you can, you still can't make ends meet then you should try to see if there's any way you can increase your income, however slightly. Could you take on a few hours a week in overtime? Could you get a part time evening job?

Of course, this is much easier to say than do, but if you're in serious debt trouble then you have to explore every avenue available.
